Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters

Many of you may be unaware of the fact that at Poorman’s Heating and Air Conditioning we not only take care of your HVAC systems, but we also take great pride in our plumbing area of experitise as well. We get asked on a daily basis about the differences between a tank and a tankless water heater.

  • Which is more expensive?
  • How much money will I save?
  • What’s the difference?
  • Does installation cost more?

Here are a few insights to the great water heater debate:

Tank vs. Tankless

Regular water heater tanks are created to keep your water hot for 24 hours a day, seven days a week even if you’re not using the warm water. The more energy efficient approach would be a tankless water heater which only gets your water hot on demand.

Believe it or not, your tank style water heater causes you to loose 30% efficiency due to the constant heating and reheating of water all day every day. Your bills can definitely reflect this over time as well.

Even though the original cost of the tankless water heater is significantly more than a tank style heater, you end up saving up to 50% on your utility bill! You can even qualify for a Federal Tax Credit through Energy Star.

It seems as though tankless water heaters are no longer just a ‘thing of the future.’ They’re here and they seem like the best option for your water heating needs. …Not to mention they’re compact! Who wants a bulky water heater hanging around the house?

If you’re interesting in going tankless, call in the professionals at Poorman’s Heating and Air Conditioning (260.422.3534).  Poorman’s specializes in heating systems, air conditioning units, plumbing services, geothermal and indoor air quality.  You won’t be disappointed with Poorman’s quick response and affordable, outstanding service.

Sump Pump/Plumbing Issues

freeport-basement-flood-cleanup-experts-freeport-ny

Two weeks ago the Fort Wayne area witnessed five-six inches of rain falling within a matter of hours.  Since then we’ve had non-stop service calls in order to help fix the flooding and plumbing issues around town.  It’s important to be prepared when instances such as massive flooding occur unexpected.

As mechanical things go, we don’t often think about the sump pump. Sump pump reside in the basement and that’s a place that we often don’t frequent. If you think about it, your sump pump is one of the hardest working appliances you own.

A submersible sump pump drains your water year round, but when a rainstorm hits the water pump works extra hard at keeping your basement from flooding. Most homes have sump pumps to aid in basement drainage. Getting familiar with your sump pump can be the first step to avoiding flood damage.  Here are a few tips:

  • Sump pumps normally have a life expectancy of ten years. The sump pump switch is often the reason for failure.
  • Check your pump a couple times a year in order to prevent an issue with flooding.  Pour water into the pit until the pump cycles.  If the water collects and fails to cycle, have your pump changed as soon as possible.  If your sump pump fails during a rain storm that means that thousands of gallons of water back up into your basement.
  • If you basement does in fact flood, your other appliances will need replacing.  Water damage to your furnace, water heart and other electrical systems will malfunction and could cause significantly more damage.
  • A back-up sump pump can be a wise idea just on the rare case that your original sump pump fails.

If you’re in need of some assistance, call the experts at Poorman’s Heating and Air Conditioning (260.422.3534).  Emergency services are available 24/7. Poorman’s also specializes in geothermal systems, call for an estimate.  You won’t be disappointed with Poorman’s quick response and affordable, outstanding service. Leaky Faucet Problems

It’s interesting to read in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette about the arguments arising from area residents up in arms about a rate hike in their water bills.  Those using 5,200 gallons of water a month are now paying a little over $17 a month for water, by 2015 they will be paying approximately $24.  What some residents don’t realize is that they can cut back on several gallons of water each day if they take care of a few plumbing issues around the house.  Poorman’s Heating and Air Conditioning found in Fort Wayne, Indiana takes care of several plumbing issues on a daily  basis, but many problems can be fixed by the home owners themselves.  The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has a page on the website devoted to water saving tips for home owners.  Check out the website and see for yourself how easy it is to save a few dollars by just taking care of your leaky toilets and sinks.  If however, the plumbing problem far exceeds your mechanical work, call Poorman’s (260-422-3534) or check out their Facebook page for their plumbing expertise. Poorman’s also provides heating system, AC unit, geothermal and indoor air quality services. You won’t be disappointed!
