Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters

Many of you may be unaware of the fact that at Poorman’s Heating and Air Conditioning we not only take care of your HVAC systems, but we also take great pride in our plumbing area of experitise as well. We get asked on a daily basis about the differences between a tank and a tankless water heater.

  • Which is more expensive?
  • How much money will I save?
  • What’s the difference?
  • Does installation cost more?

Here are a few insights to the great water heater debate:

Tank vs. Tankless

Regular water heater tanks are created to keep your water hot for 24 hours a day, seven days a week even if you’re not using the warm water. The more energy efficient approach would be a tankless water heater which only gets your water hot on demand.

Believe it or not, your tank style water heater causes you to loose 30% efficiency due to the constant heating and reheating of water all day every day. Your bills can definitely reflect this over time as well.

Even though the original cost of the tankless water heater is significantly more than a tank style heater, you end up saving up to 50% on your utility bill! You can even qualify for a Federal Tax Credit through Energy Star.

It seems as though tankless water heaters are no longer just a ‘thing of the future.’ They’re here and they seem like the best option for your water heating needs. …Not to mention they’re compact! Who wants a bulky water heater hanging around the house?

If you’re interesting in going tankless, call in the professionals at Poorman’s Heating and Air Conditioning (260.422.3534).  Poorman’s specializes in heating systems, air conditioning units, plumbing services, geothermal and indoor air quality.  You won’t be disappointed with Poorman’s quick response and affordable, outstanding service.

Stray Energy

Are there times when you leave the house and forget to turn off an important appliance? Perhaps you left a light on or the television playing to an empty room—it’s happened to all of us: stray energy waste. Did you know that often times stray energy waste can unintentionally be due to your heating and cooling equipment without you even being aware?

Here are some examples of stray energy:

  • Broken or malfunctioning sensors: Sensors help fans or pumps to run when necessary.  If an issue occurs where the sensor is not working properly your equipment could be running when not needed wasting energy.
  • Thermostat: Have you ever adjusted your thermostat only to forget to go back and readjust it?  If you fail to reset your thermostat you could be losing an incredible amount of energy unintentionally.

Within the past few months the Natural Resources Defense Council has published a report titled, Real Time Energy Management, which helps support evidence about the possibility of fairly significant savings when the loss of stray energy is recognized.

Heating Bill Rise

No matter how much effort you’ve been putting into saving on your heating costs this season, our frigid winter thus far has made it quite difficult. Why is this?

Not only did the temperatures drop to a record -25 but also the government expects that at least 90% of households will see an increase in their heating bills. Not only will bills rise for those using electricity and propane based heat, but also for those using natural gas.

USAtoday recently posted an article with a little more insight regarding the spike in the heating bills and why exactly we’ll be paying more.
